EJ: France: The Legal Battle Surrounding St Nicholas Cathedral in Nice

"French judges have ruled in favor of the Russian government, in a long-running ownership dispute concerning the Orthodox St Nicholas Cathedral in Nice. A century ago Russian emigrants fleeing communism ended up settling in Nice, on the Côte d’Azur. Like many exiles, they viewed themselves as part of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, not the Russian Orthodox church. The parish of which the cathedral in Nice is now a part is therefore under the authority of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Parishioners reject Moscow's claim to the cathedral, fearing that the Russian government will turn it over to the main body of the Russian Orthodox church. They've launched an appeal against the decision of the French court."
