CNN: Rare photos document birth of Taiwan

"Lying just 160 kilometers (100 miles) from the People's Republic of China is the Republic of China, an island now more commonly known as Taiwan.

Its history is inextricably linked to mainland China's, but a new exhibition of photographs, ranging from rare 100-year-old antiques to present-day images, document a island undergoing momentous transitions long before its mighty neighbor.

Entitled 'Retracing Our Steps: A Photographic Journey Though 100 years of the ROC,' the exhibition is organized by the Taipei Representative Office in the UK alongside the Brunei Gallery at the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies (S.O.A.S.)."
